S01E04 Full Internet View on “Base” NCS 5500 Systems
Disclaimer: In the following page and video, you’ll find a demo of the internet-optimized mode on NCS5500 routers based on Jericho (or Jericho+). This demo ran in late 2017 is still accurate. With recent internet distribution you should still be able to store a full view v4 and v6 in the internal memories (LEM and LPM). Does it mean it’s recommended? Probably not: it will occupy 80% or more of the LEM which doesn’t give more room for growth and potential routing incident. In September 2019, we recommend you select devices with eTCAM for internet peering roles unless you are running a smart system of route filtering to contain the table size.

In previous posts, we presented:
- the different routers and line cards in NCS5500 portfolio
- we explained how IPv4 prefixes are sorted in LEM, LPM and eTCAM
- and how IPv6 prefixes are stored in the same databases.
Let’s illustrate how we can handle a full IPv4 and IPv6 Internet view on base systems and line cards (i.e. without external TCAM, only using the LEM and LPM internal to the forwarding ASIC).
The demo
Following YouTube video will demonstrate we can handle multiple internet peers in the global routing table (15 full views on our demo) on base systems with the appropriate optimizatios.
We will demo how we can monitor the important resources used to store routing information and finally we will project what could be the internet size if it follows 2017 trends and how long the systems will be handle the full v4/v6 views.

This video shows NCS5500 using Jericho-based line cards without external TCAM (also valid for fixed-form systems) handling the current internet table with still significant growth margin.
